PURPOSE:To completely automate a troublesome operation associated with replacement of a paper and enhance operability, by a system wherein when a paper of a different width is newly used, the paper width is immediately detected optically by a paper-detecting means, an optimum printing region according to the paper width is calculated and set by a controlling part, and a printing head is operated within the region. CONSTITUTION:A paper-detecting means 2 for optically detecting the width of a printing paper 9 comprises charge-coupled devices (CCD) and an LED array arranged in a linear pattern over the entire width of the printing paper on the inlet side of a guide member 8 by which the printing paper 9 is guided. When outermost parts of the paper 9 are detected by detection signals outputted from the CCD line sensor 2, a controlling part automatically calculates the width of the paper 9, calculates and sets an optimum printing region according to the paper width, and performs such a control that a printing head can be moved only within the region. The controlling part is constituted of a microprocessor or the like. |
