A tampon is produced from one or more thin fibre material filaments. A tampon blank is produced by circular-knitting or plaiting the fibre material filament or filaments to form at least one tubular tow (1). Parts (3, 4) of the tow (1) are twisted over other parts (5) thereof to form a body which comprises substantially coaxial and mutually abutting layers of tow material. The body is then compressed to the intended tampon form. The resulting tampon thus comprises substantially one or more tows (1) formed by tubularly plaiting or circularly knitting the fibre material filament or filaments, the tow or tows being arranged so as to form substantially coaxial and mutually abutting layers of tow material in the tampon.
