In a tape of a crosslinked plastic which is shrinkable under the application of heat and can be laid in the manner of a sleeve (2) around an elongated article (4) and, after the joining of the tape edges (3a, 3b) is shrinkable onto the article (4) by the application of heat, the tape edge regions (3a, 3b) consist of non-crosslinked plastic and the joining (5) of the tape edges (3a, 3b) is carried out by melt welding (Fig. 2).
