PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal optical element suitable as high-density information recording medium or display, providing improved orientation state of high polymer crystal, by blending high polymer liquid crystal with a specific amount of a biphenyl (derivative). CONSTITUTION:(A) High polymer liquid crystal containing a main chain preferably consisting of poly(meth)acrylate, polysiloxane, etc., and a spacer consisting of 2-18C (oxy)methylene chain is blended with (B) 0.01-10wt% biphenyl shown by formula I (X and Y are H, 1-11C alkyl, 1-15C oxyalkyl, halogen, nitrile, nitro, etc.) or biphenyl derivative to give the aimed liquid crystal optical element. Groups shown by formula II - formula IV (R is OCH3, CH3, etc.) may be cited as liquid crystal group of the component A. |
