A device (3) for dividing a stream of plastic containers into at least two streams with a programmed and controlled number of containers, comprising a star wheel conveyor (3) having vacuum pockets (6) which support the containers by adhesion thereof against the pocket surface, by creating a negative pressure along a given angular path covered by each pocket. Flow stopping means (5) are located in the flow channels of the pockets (6) to locally stop the negative pressure flow thereto which is stably generated along the predetermined angular path of the conveyor (3). A divider assembly comprising said divider (3) and auxiliary conveyors (2, 4) for picking up and laying down the various sorted containers.
