A package to fit and support an enclosed article comprises a flexible impermeable bag contg. granular material and an outlet by which the bag can be evacuated until the package is stiffened by immobilisation of the granular material, which pref. comprises expanded polystyrene beads. The granular material may be confined in small flexible sachets which are permeable to air. Alternatively, the package may be subdivided by internal compartments or pockets which are permeable to air, one of which may contain the article and one or more others the granular material. These permeable partitions or pockets may be of textile mateiral, pref. partially elastic in a transverse direction relative to the shape of the pocket. One or more internal compartments may be filled with a fluid instead of granules. Such packages are pref. filled by a device which accepts the granular material from a suitable hopper and fills the package, or compartment(s) therein, progressively by injection via a feed tube progressively withdrawn relative to the depth of the package, or vice versa. Typically, the package comprise panels of PVC film 0.2 to 0.3 mm thick with welded borders. |
