The invention relates to a control for a symbol indicator on a coin-operated gaming machine having an event-controlled and a random-controlled symbol indicator. By means of a scanning device assigned to the symbol indicator, the symbol indicated in the viewing window of the front pane of the gaming machine is recorded. With a special-game count higher than zero and win play-off, a credit counter is incremented and the event-controlled symbol indicator is decremented, the event-controlled symbol indicator being incremented in the case of a play-off without a win. To guarantee a more uniform win pay-out in the special-game mode, when there is at least one symbol identity in the event-controlled and random-controlled symbol indicator the credit counter is incremented and the special-game counter and the event-controlled symbol indicator are decremented by one symbol. In the case of a special game without a win, the event-controlled symbol indicator is incremented by one symbol.
