For the optimum utilisation of power, torque, consumption and exhaust gas composition, the timings of the valves must be adjusted according to the speed and load output of the engine. Known solutions are of very expensive design and therefore uneconomic. The invention solves this problem in that from the pressure chamber of the hydraulic clearance adjusting element an oil passage leads to a control element, which allows variable quantities of oil to flow out during opening and closing of the valve. As a result, the adjusting element is compressed, the valve opens later and closes earlier.
