An apparatus for transporting material on conveying rollers (3) which are mounted laterally, in a non-twistable manner, on roller shafts (2) which are mounted one behind the other in a supporting beam (1), has, for the purpose of torque transmission from a longitudinal shaft (5), drive bevel gears (6), which are arranged in a freely rotatable manner on the longitudinal shaft (5), and bevel gears (7) which are fastened on every roller shaft (2). For the purpose of torque transmission, a starting ring (13) is arranged on every side of every drive bevel gear (6) and is connected via springs (27) to a setting ring (18) by means of frictional engagement. The two bevel gears (6 and 7) are each provided with conical friction surfaces (6A and 7A) and with toothing sections (6B and 7B). The conical friction surfaces (6A and 7A) are adapted in terms of their diameters such that they permit a backlash between the toothing sections (6B and 7B). <IMAGE>
