The gas or electric cooker or other appliance has an upper front panel through which the handles of controls do not project beyond the plane of the front of the appliance. The panel is movable between a forward position, which is in that plane, and a rearward position in which it allows the controls to be gripped and turned easily. The panel is hooked by teeth attaching plates to a fixed bracket on which they can swing horizontally or vertically against the resistance of springs. A window in each plate engages a stud under a tongue in the retracted position of a lever with teeth ensuring that the panel remains vertical. In the rearward position it operates a switch.
