The invention relates to a method for the purpose of achieving speed control of a chuck spindle (1) of a lathe. The invention solves the problem that, if the starting speed of the lathe is too high, the spindle is set in motion when the lathe is put into operation again and that it was not possible to select the maximum speed of the spindle up to which the speed could be infinitely varied following starting. With the method, a desired maximum speed is set by means of a regulation means (12) and the speed can be increased up to the said maximum speed after actuation of a regulation means which actuates the starting of the spindle from the lowest speed of the spindle.
