Separating off solid contaminants from liquids in the case of relatively small amounts to be filtered in the continuous flow process, for example from lubrication oil of an internal combustion engine, is performed by pumping the liquid through a vessel which contains a filter material. A disadvantage in this case is that the coarse and the fine dirt particles are indiscriminately retained by one and the same filter material. As a result, the coarse particles block the pores, so that the filter action falls away very rapidly. The filter apparatus according to the invention prevents this disadvantage in that, in a cylindrical space (1), for example in a cylindrical vessel, a cylindrical hollow body (6) of filter material is situated centrally, is rotatable about its longitudinal axis and has an annular intermediate space (5) as spacing to the wall (1'). The feed (14) of the contaminated liquid proceeds tangentially into the annular space (5) between the wall (1') and the cylindrical hollow body (6). The outflow (13) of the purified liquid proceeds from the interior (15) of the cylindrical hollow body (6) (Fig. 2). <IMAGE>
