PURPOSE:To reduce a speed change shock at the time of speed change which takes place during constant speed traveling and improve responsiveness by varying the opening of a throttle at the time of a speed change operation by an automatic speed change control means, during the operation of a throttle opening control means. CONSTITUTION:The electronic control means of a speed control device has a microcomputer CPU, which has an automatic speed change control means for making a speed change control as a speed change stage corresponding to the output of a vehicle speed or engine speed and an engine load or throttle opening, and a throttle opening control means for controlling a vehicle speed by the control a throttle opening. In this case, control is made so as to vary the throttle opening at the time of the speed change operation by the automatic speed change means, during the operation of the throttle opening control means. Thereby, when carrying out constant speed travel control at a defined speed change stage of up-shift or down-shift, control can be carried out by only adjusting the opening of a throttle, relieving a speed change shock.
