A splined tube assembly for a vehicle steering shaft comprises a tube (20) which is preformed by drawing or extrusion to provide a rough splined interior to the tube. A universal joint piece (22) is then secured to one end of the tube (20), e.g., by welding, and the interior of the tube (20) is subjected to a final broaching operation, preferably by a single pass, after the welding operation. The splined interior of the tube (20) can then slidably receive the splined end portion (24) of a rod (16). The steering shaft includes two universal joints (10, 14). <IMAGE> |
