The methyl ester of 1-(2,3,5-tri-O -acetyl beta-D-ribofuranosyl) 1,2,4-triazole 3-carboxylic acid is made by (a) reaction of methyl 1,2,4-triazole 3-carboxylate with 1,2,3,5-tetra-O-acetyl beta-D-ribofuranose at 160-165 deg.C in an oil batt until the sugar has melted; (b) treatment of the prod. with bis (p-nitro phenyl) phosphate at the same temp. under reduced pressure; (c) soln. of the residue in hot benzene; and (d) crystallising by treatment with cyclohexane. - The cpd. can be used as an intermediate for prepn. of medicaments.
