Pervaporation method for separating liquids in mixture

The efficiency of the pervaporation method for the separation or enrichment of liquids in mixture, e.g. water and ethyl alcohol, can be greatly improved when the partitioning membrane is made of a polymeric composition comprising a specific organosilyl-substituted polyenic polymer composed of the monomeric moieties represented by the general formula <IMAGE> in which R1 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms and the groups denoted by R are each independently a hydrogen atom, a monovalent hydrocarbon group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms or a silicon-containing organic group such as those represented by the general formula -CH2-SiMe2R2, Me being a methyl group and R2 being a lower alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms. The performance and durability of the membrane can be further improved when the polymeric composition is a polymer blend of the above described polyenic polymer and a poly(trimethyl vinyl silane).
