The container (10) for dishes is closable by a hatch (14), and i in it are rotatable rinsing arms (15,16) to which are fed fluid under pressure by a centrifugal type circulating pump (17) when it rotates in a first direction. During the starting process, the pump (17) rotates counterwise to the first direction for a specific period before changing to that direction of rotation. When the pump is running in the counter direction it produces a reduced flow. The pump is driven by a single-phase non-synchronous motor with a main winding for each direction of rotation, the windings being connectable to feed voltage via a contact in a programmer for machine control. A programmer motor for rapid forward feed is controllable via a relay dependent upon a hatch switch, so that when the programmer is in a first stage with the hatch switch e closed, the relay prevents connection of the motor, whilst when the programmer is in a stage other than the first, the relay connects the motor.
