A copper extraction process involves the step of treating roasted ore (esp. dead roasted sulphide ore) in an autogenous reduction suspension smelting zone with an oxygen-contg. gas (pref. contg. 50-100 vol.% oxygen) and a reductant in amt. sufficient to reduce the ore to copper. - Blister copper is produced directly from roasted ore, without a converter refining stage, by a continuous, energy-efficient method. Oxidising conditions, required for burning off sulphur and oxidising iron in the ore, can be employed during roasting to give a sulphur dioxide-rich off-gas suitable for feeding to an acid plant, while reducing conditions, required for minimising copper loss in slag, are employed during smelting (cf. flash smelting). The off-gas volume from the smelting operation is much less than that from conventional smelting operations.(0/0) |
