An apparatus and a method for detecting an initial synchronization in a mobile communication system using an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access are provided to improve an initial synchronization detection performance by performing an initial synchronization detection using a simultaneous detection scheme of a power level comparison value and an auto correlation value. An apparatus for detecting an initial synchronization in a mobile communication system using an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access includes an auto correlator(510), an initial power controller(540), and a synchronization detection unit(520). The auto correlator calculates and outputs an auto correlation value based on a repeat characteristic of a preamble in an input signal. The initial power controller is simultaneously operated with the auto correlator, and controls to output a power level value which is proper for an initial synchronization detection. The synchronization determining unit detects an initial synchronization by performing a multiplying the auto correlation value by a ratio of the power level value at previous period and the power level value at a current period.
