This method for forming and dispensing thin sheath portions onto containers consists in cutting the sheath 3 on an anvil blade 14 held in the sheath 3 in the flattened state, then, immediately after this cutting, in displacing the portion obtained, by pinching between at least one roller arranged in the sheath and another, outer, drive roller. The device for its implementation comprises a core 9 whose upstream end, of flattened rectangular cross section corresponding to that of the sheath, is prolonged by a blade 14 opening the sheath and extending beyond the cutting cylinders 7, for which it constitutes an anvil, whilst the downstream end of the core is equipped with rollers 16a capable of interacting with the bearing surfaces 22a-22b of the means for supporting this core, in order to pinch the sheath and drive it in displacement. <IMAGE>
