<p>An exercise apparatus includes a pivotally mounted exercise bar (14), a cylinder assembly (20) attached to the bar (19), pressurized air in the cylinder assembly for providing a force on the exercise bar (14), and hydraulic fluid in the cylinder assembly (20) for controlling the movement of the exercise bar. Separate air (26) and hydraulic cylinders (20) are attached to the exercise bar (14), and the pressurized air counterbalances the weight of the bar. In another embodiment (Fig. 3), a pair of cylinders (39,40) are coaxially mounted on a valve block (38), and the pistons (41,42) in the cylinders (39,40) are connected by a rod (43) which extends through the valve block (38). The cylinders (39,40) are filled with hydraulic fluid between the pistons and the valve block, and the remote end of one of the cylinders is pressurized with air. A valve (46) in the valve block (38) controls the flow of fluid between the cylinders (39,40). <IMAGE></p> |
