To produce an inspection and cleaning shaft for an underground pipe conduit (1), shaft rings (2) connected to one another in tension-proof fashion are sunk into the ground by removing earth from their interior. The lower shaft ring (2) has downwardly open recesses which are closed by displaceably arranged cover plates (7) and into which the pipe conduit (1) can enter as the lower end of the lower shaft ring (2) is sunk, while the cover plates (7) are raised. After the lower part of the lower shaft ring (2) has been sunk to a level below the pipe conduit (1), a section of the latter is cut away and the space under the conduit ends formed is filled with concrete or the like to form a bottom with a channel. <IMAGE>
