A dispensing system for goods or services is proposed which identifies the currency of the value units stored in a semiconductor memory of a value card. In accordance with the invention, the value units which are to be stored are supplemented by one of several selectable currency markings. The electronic storage and control devices (13) are permanently set to an arbitrarily selectable currency marking. The result of this is to prevent a value card having value units of one currency from being misused in an electronic storage and control device (13) which is programmed for a different currency. It is advantageous to provide specific sets of the value units stored in the semiconductor memory of a value card with different currency markings. As a result, a value card can be used in countries having different currencies. <IMAGE>
