A dispenser of viscous cosmetic or pharmaceutical substances, such as creams, ointments, gels and the like comprises a jar shaped container 11 wherein the viscous material is confined in a space between the bottom of the jar and an upper circular disc 14 provided with a dispensing opening 18 and in screwthreaded engagement with the wall of the jar so that rotation of the disc compresses the material against the base of the jar to force it through opening 18. Cover 12 may internally carry an insert supporting an anti- microbial material. In another embodiment (Fig. 4), a rotary upper disc mounts a threaded lower disc on a stem 55 so that the lower disc is advanced upwards to dispense the contents. In another embodiment (Fig. 3) the jar mounts an inverted cup-shaped rotary member having a spring-biassed base disc in threaded engagement therewith. <IMAGE>
