A process for producing a knitted garment, especially panties, vest or the like, in a knitting machine, the needle space of which has a width or a diameter of more than 9'', has the following process steps: - knitting of an annular fixed selvedge and of a border (A) of basic yarn adjoining the latter, - knitting of a tube (B) of basic yarn with a specific number of stitch rows, - oscillating knitting of a shaped article (C) of basic yarn, such that an indentation, slot or the like is obtained as a result of the absent sinker-stitch connection between two stitch wales, - rotary knitting for producing a terminating edge (D) consisting of at least three rows (D1 to D3), at least one intermediate row (D2) of which consists of meltable yarn, and - melting of the meltable yarn in order to secure the stitches adjacent to the latter (Figure 1). <IMAGE>
