<p>In an electronic dictionary data E consisting of a word index (index word) C and the description D for the index word C are stored in a large capacity memory medium or ROM (MCD), and the data E is read from the memory medium by means of a ROM player (4), thereby providing a visual display, printed or sound output. Preferably the index word C is assumed as a parent and the correlated word F related to the index word C is assumed as a child. Thus, the index word C and the correlated word F are displayed whilst being hierarchized. The large capacity memory medium is accommodated into a casing (21) housing the ROM player. In addition, operating means for the electronic dictionary, e.g., a power unit, an input unit, an output display unit, and an operational control unit etc. are also provided in the casing (21). Thus, the electronic dictionary is of unitary structure. The electronic dictionary may be used as an electronic single language dictionary in which the word indexed (index word) C and its description D are indicated in a single language, e.g., an English-English dictionary etc., or may be used as an electronic multiple or plural language dictionary in which the index word C and its description D are indicated in different languages, e.g., an English-Japanese dictionary or the like.</p> |
