PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high yield, by bringing propylene or isobutylene into contact with ammonia and oxygen in the vapor phase in the presence of an oxide catalyst containing specific composition components. CONSTITUTION:Propylene or isobutylene is brought into contact with NH3 and O in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst at a high temperature to give acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile. In the process, an oxide catalyst containing Mo, Bi Fe and 0.002-0.2, preferably 0.005-0.1 atoms, based on 12 Mo atoms, component (A) (A is one or more elements selected from Pd, Pt, Os and Ir) is used as the above-mentioned catalyst. If the atomic range of the component (A) is narrower than that described above, yield of NH3 is not improved. If the atomic range is winder than that described above, the amount of by-products is undesirably increased. |
