PURPOSE:To produce an alloy for an Nd-B-Fe permanent magnet having a specific compsn. at a low cost by adding a reducing agent such as metallic Ca and flux such as CaCl2 to NdCl3, Fe and B and subjecting the mixture to a heating treatment under specific conditions to reduce the NdCl3. CONSTITUTION:The metallic Ca, CaH2, etc., as the reducing agent and >=1 kinds among the CaCl2, NaCl and KCl are added as the flux to the NdCl2, Fe, and B (or B-Fe alloy) to prepare the raw material. The above-mentioned reducing agent is added thereto preferably at 1.0-2.0 times the weight of the stoichiometrical required amt. and the flux at 0.5-4.0 times the mol of the stoichiometrical forming amt. of the CaCl2 to be formed by the reduction. The above-mentioned raw material is heated to melt at 1,000-1,350 deg.C in an inert gaseous or reducing gaseous atmosphere or under the substantially vacuum condition to reduce the NdCl3. The Nd-B-Fe alloy for the permanent magnet consisting of 25.0-50.0wt% Nd, 0.3-5.0% B and the balance substantially Fe is thus obtd. |
