PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful for organic syntheses, especially for the synthesis of natural substance, quantitatively in high yield under mild condition, by reacting an aldehyde with an alcohol using a distannoxane compound as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula IV or formula V can be produced by reacting an aldehyde or ketone compound of formula I (R<1> is H or organic group; R<2> is organic group; R<1> and R<2> may be bonded together) such as hexanal with excess amount of an alcohol of formula II (R<3> is organic group; m is 1 or 2) such as ethylene glycol optionally in an inert solvent such as benzene in the presence of a small amount of a distannoxane compound catalyst of formula III [R is alkyl or phenyl; X and Y are halogen, OH, -NCS or -OR<4> (R<4> is alkyl or aryl)] such as 1-hydroxy-3-isothiocyanato- tetrabutyldistannoxane under heating, thereby acetalizing or ketalizing the alcohol. |
