A blower is used to extract argon-rich gas from the top of the crude argon column in order to provide the necessary reduced pressure of 0.8-1.0 atm. within the column. The blower replaces the oxygen compressor conventionally used in the oxygen product line to decompress the crude argon column by suction. An additional modification is that liquid oxygen is withdrawn from the crude argon column via a descending line at a level below the liq. level thereof. The liquid oxygen is thereby pressurised under its own gravity to the required pressure of 1.0-1.2 atm.
