This tool for cutting off the outer covering of a cable or the like, especially an electrical cable, comprises a body 1 in which a passage 17 is provided which is intended to receive one end of the cable, the outer covering of which is to be cut off. This tool also comprises at least one cutter 13, the cutting element 28a, 28b of which is intended to project into the passage 7 over a distance corresponding to the thickness of the covering to be cut off; this cutting element is contained in a plane transverse to the axis of the passage so that the covering of the cable is cut off in the form of a helix by relative rotation between the tool and the cable. The cutter 13, carried by a plate 12, is mounted so as to pivot on itself about an axis approximately perpendicular to the axis of the passage so as to be able to vary the pitch of the helix along which the covering is cut off. The passage 7 also has three bearing surfaces for the cable, this advantageously preventing the cable from being rotationally blocked in the passage 7 if the cable has irregularities over its external periphery. <IMAGE>
