A breech for firearms, especially for sporting weapons and hunting rifles, comprises a breech housing (3) which is connected to a barrel (1) in the axial direction, has an internally located breech body (17) which can be displaced axially via a cocking lever (11) which can be displaced backwards and forwards in the axial direction, and has at least one locking or spreading element (7) which is arranged in said breech body (17) and is held such that it can be latched into a locked position in a recess (5) which is incorporated in the inner wall of the breech housing (3). In order to create a breech arrangement for firearms which consists of a relatively small number of parts which are additionally formed simply, it is provided that the breech device be constructed to be free of control elements and at least one locking and spreading element (7) which is provided can be pivoted, and thus can be locked and unlocked, jointly with the cocking lever (11) and/or at least one further locking or spreading element (7'), via a synchronous drive (Figure 1).
