A synchronous motor has a device which ensures that it starts only in the required rotation direction. This device has an inner coupling part (66) which is connected to the motor shaft, and two hook-shaped radial arms (118) with cam surfaces (120, 122). An outer coupling part (66) is constructed in the form of a cup. Its circumferential wall (74) has windows (70, 72) through which bent arms (106, 112) of essentially curved braking bodies (68) are passed. The latter interact with a stationary braking drum (54) surrounding them. Cam surfaces (108, 110) are constructed on in each case one of the arms (106) of the braking bodies (68) and interact with the cam surfaces (120, 122) on the arms (110) of the inner coupling part (76), such that, in the event of the rotor starting in the incorrect direction, the braking bodies (68) are pressed against the braking drum (54), while, in the event of the correct rotation direction, the braking bodies (68) are held inwards positively and against the centrifugal force. <IMAGE>
