Gas sealing arrangement for a shaft with a seal housing, a first sealing ring arranged in the seal housing and a sealing ring arranged on the shaft and fixed to it. The two sealing rings operate with their seal end faces opposite one another, with a sealing gap in between, the first sealing ring being pushed towards the sealing ring fixed to the shaft by a pressing force which is influenced by springs distributed over the circumference. Arranged in the seal housing, surrounding the shaft in a ring and leaving an annular radial gap, are permanent magnets which build up a magnetic field in the annular gap. Arranged in the annular gap is an annular electromagnet which is supported against the first sealing ring and against the springs. The field strength of the electromagnet can be controlled or regulated in order to adjust the pressing force and hence the sealing gap. <IMAGE>
