It is known to suspend ceilings, for example in operating theatres, for keeping the air sterile, the air circulation for the operating theatre taking place via this ceiling. UV light is here widely used for sterilisation. It then proves to be a disadvantage that the sterilising UV light at the same time also forms free oxygen radicals which can lead to the formation of undesired and even hazardous compounds. To avoid this, it is proposed according to the invention that the air to be purified is preferably passed from the circulating-air area of, for example, an operating theatre first through a sterilising irradiation section and the air thus treated is then drawn or forced through chemisorption masses - for further elimination of bacteria and of the harmful substances formed by the sterilising irradiation. The air masses to be treated are, after they have been forced through the sterilising irradiation section, fed to a filter mass which represents alternating alkaline and acidic compounds, and the last mass taking the flow is a neutralising activated carbon mass with a downstream high-performance suspended-matter filter.
