PURPOSE:To perform two-color or multicolor printing at a high speed without replacing an ink ribbon cassette, by performing printing using different sets of ink ribbon cassettes at the times of forward and backward movements of a carriage. CONSTITUTION:At the time of the forward movement of a carriage 3, the ink ribbon of a black ribbon cassette 9 is taken up in the direction shown by an arrow A and, at the time of the backward movement of the carriage 3, the ink robbon of a red ribbon cassette is taken up in the direction shown by an arrow B. If printing data is already inputted when the carriage 3 reaches a printing start position, a thermal head 7 is contacted with a platen under pressure and, at the same time, printing is performed while the ink ribbon of the black ribbon cassette 9 is taken up. When the carriage reaches a predetermined printing stop position, black printing of one line is finished to release the pressure contact of the thermal head 7. When there is red printing data, the carriage is backwardly moved to the printing start position at the time of the backward movement of the carriage and, thereafter, a thermal head 8 is contacted with the platen under pressure and the carriage is backwardly moved while the ink ribbon of the red ribbon cassette 10 is taken up to perform printing. When the red printing of one line is finished, the pressure contact of the thermal head 8 is released and the carriage is returned to the left end position of the platen. |
