A piece of furniture on which to sit or lie, which consists entirely of non-metallic parts, is equipped with a lying area 4 capable of being swung open. A double-armed lever 8 consisting of wood is rotatably mounted on the furniture base 1 underneath the lying area 4, one arm of which cooperates with the underside of the lying area for its pivoting and on the other arm of which there engages an elastic webbing 11. It is thus possible to lift and lower the lying area with relatively little effort, without having to use metal parts. <IMAGE>
