The system has an inertial measuring unit and a processor, preferably for a portable inertial navigation system, by means of which the point coordinates of the points to be surveyed are obtained without an operator of the device having to determine or to take into consideration the eccentricity. This is achieved by a point on the housing of the inertial navigation system being provided as a reference point for the measurements, the point coordinates of the points to be surveyed, which are determined, referring to this point and the eccentricity vector from the reference point to the centre of the inertial measuring unit being stored in the processor. It is advantageous that the reference point is a spatial corner, the angles of the corner are 90@, the adjoining edges and areas of the housing being straight and level and that the angles between the edges adjoining the corner and the coordinate axes in which the point coordinates of the point to be surveyed are determined are indicated after retrieval.
