PURPOSE:To improve combustion quality to restrain the generation of smoke by attaching slidably to a cylinder head a sub-combustion chamber member having an opening communicating to a main combustion chamber of an engine to provide a variable sectional area of the opening. CONSTITUTION:While a piston 1 is formed with a main combustion chamber 2, a cooling water path 4, a jet member 5 made of ceramic material, an upper sub-combustion chamber member 6 and a lower sub-combustion chamber member 7 made of ceramic material or heat resisting alloy are attached to a cylinder head 3. And to the upper chamber member 6 are attached a glow plug 9 and a fuel injection nozzle 11. Also, the lower chamber member 7 is attached laterally slidably to the cylinder head 3 to move back and forth a slide shaft 12 fixed to the member 7 from the outside so that an opening 13 formed in the lower chamber member 7 is properly screened by a communicating hole 14 formed in the jet member 5 to thereby controllably change the sectional area of the opening 13. |
