A method for processing extruded, moist, hot tobacco containing materials as they are continuously extruded, drying the extruded material rapidly with microwave energy and then rapidly cooling the extruded material in order to give it a suitably rigid and dimensionally stable structure which can be shaped into an article to be smoked. Microwave drying provides substantially uniform drying without surface hardening of the material. Cooling may take place by passing air at high speed, chilled air or by generating a partial vacuum through the preextruded material or by placing the material in contact with cold contact elements or a cryogenic bath.
|
