PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound useful for the production of phenol, etc., in short time, and selectively suppressing the production of primary aromatic hydroperoxide, by treating a mixture of hydroperoxides in the presence of an alkali and an organic quaternary ammonium salt. CONSTITUTION:A hydroperoxide mixture containing a compound of formula ArCH2OOH [Ar is (substituted) aromatic group] as a primary aromatic hydroperoxide and a tertiary aromatic hydroperoxide is treated in the presence of an alkali (e.g. NaOH, KOH, CaOH, etc.) and an organic quaternary ammonium salt (e.g. tetra-n-butylammonium chloride). A phenolic compound can be produced by the acid decomposition of the treated product in high yield with reduced by-products. A production raw material for peroxide can also be produced similarly in high purity. |
