The aim of the invention is to achieve greater accuracy of the measurement and thus to provide the prerequisite for increasing the printing quality and to reduce the adjustment expenditure. The object of the invention thus consists in recording and evaluating different relative optical densities on a printing plate or a film and minimising the necessary positioning of the original to be measured to one displacement direction. The object is achieved in that the calibration of the sensors is carried out by a calibration strip which is arranged transversely to the measuring direction and has a predetermined degree of area coverage, the correction calibration specific to the original or the printing plate is carried out by means of mean values formed at least over one zone width from at least one calibration strip applied along the measuring zones on the measurement original with minimum and maximum area coverage, the correction calibration is carried out individually for each ink zone column on the basis of the mean values determined, and the beginning of the measurement is triggered by the leading edge of one of the calibration strips available and/or of a measuring mark which is printed with the copy. <IMAGE>
