The brake system has a tandem master brake cylinder (4), directly actuable by a brake pedal (19), to which cylinder the wheel brake cylinders (31) of the wheel brakes (3, 30) are connected. The wheel brakes (3, 30) have two wheel brake cylinders (34), which can be actuated by the pressure of an engine-driven pump (42), the pump pressure being controlled by a brake valve (2) which can be controlled by a piston-cylinder unit (21) connected into the pushrod (18, 22) between tandem master brake cylinder (4) and brake pedal (19). For brake slip control, a release piston (17) connected to the pushrod (18) is provided in a release cylinder (16) between brake pedal (19) and tandem master brake cylinder (4), which piston can be subjected to the pump pressure by way of a 3/2-way valve (52), thereby moving the brake pedal (19) and the tandem master brake cylinder (4) into the brake release position. During brake slip control the wheel brakes (3, 30) are actuated solely by means of the wheel brake cylinders (34), in that the said cylinders are connected to the pump outlet or the return line (47) by alternate triggering of the solenoid valves (43, 44, 45, 46). <IMAGE>
