In a memory (Sp) of a microcomputer system (MRS), which is connected to an interface (SB) for operation of a switching device (VE), using messages (m) and information (i) which are provided for operation of the switching device (VE), a representation of the working memory information of the switching device (VE) is created and updated. This memory information can represent, for example, an "electronic telephone book", using which, for example, subscriber telephone numbers are identified at an operator's desk (AP) of a switching device (VE). Also, the call from the enquiring subscriber to the identified subscriber is set up by the microcomputer system (MRS), using a special message (m) which is sent to the switching device (VE). <IMAGE>
