A handy image reader in which an image sensor (5) comes into contact with the surface of an original (1) and moves in a predetermined subscanning direction (A) to read information such as characters or pictures on the surface of the original (1). A roller (7) is provided in the casing (2) in parallel with the image sensor (5), and is driven at a constant rotational speed by a motor (10) so that the casing (2) moves at a constant speed in the subscanning direction. Namely, the casing (2) can be driven at a constant speed linearly and stably so that the original is read at high speeds while maintaining high resolution without being affected by the difference in skill among individual operators. |
