Cutting oils, hitherto, are either mineral oil products and can contain toxic solvents and a high halogen level, or are not suitable for permanent use since the vegetable products are insufficiently modified or occasionally also have highly toxic contents. The disposal of such residues has hitherto caused considerable difficulties. The novel cutting oil is therefore intended to be equivalent in quality but to be nontoxic to humans and the environment and to be considerably easier to dispose of. A cutting oil which comprises vegetable oil, glycerol, P,S additives, fatty alcohol sulphonates, ascorbic acid, gallic acid and indigo is suitable for prolonged application in machine tools and can be completely removed from swarf and workpieces by means of aqueous soda solution. This cutting fluid is suitable for all applications in machine tools in which very high cutting pressures occur.
