The cylinder head (12) and cylinder liner (15) of a piston internal combustion engine are cooled by thermostatically controlled coolant flows. The cylinder head (12), the upper section (14) of the cylinder liner and a housing (16, 17) enclosing the exhaust line (18) are assigned to a common coolant flow, which is admitted to all or only some of the assigned coolant spaces, depending on the operating condition of the piston internal combustion engine. The lower section of the cylinder liner (15) is assigned to a second coolant flow, which corresponds to the excess partial flow shut off at the pressure limiting valve (32) of the lubricating oil circuit. By means of the proposed arrangement, a differentiated cooling of individual areas of the piston internal combustion engine is achieved, which takes account of their differing temperature requirements under various operating conditions. <IMAGE>
