<p>A toaster comprises at least one heating element (18, 20) for effecting toasting, control means (26) responsive to a desired extent of toasting having been achieved to de-energise the heating element, and sensor means (30) directly or indirectly responsive to a temperature within the toaster reaching a value higher than a value or maximum value which should be achieved during toasting.
