The precipitation of salt, e.g. MgNH4PO4.6H2O, is precipitated from the effluent from an anaerobic digestion immediately after the effluent has left the digestor by reducing the pressure over the effluent. In this manner carbon dioxide is driven off and replaced by air, whereby pH increases and precipitation of the salt is promoted. The apparatus described comprises a container (1) provided adjacent the digestor and containing an assembly of wall means (4, 13) with rough surfaces and a large surface area relative to the flow rate of an effluent; an inlet (5) for the effluent from the anaerobic digestor; means (6, 7, 20, 21, 12) for distributing the flow from the inlet over said walls means; and outlets (9,10) for removing precipitated salt, e.g. MgNH4PO4.6H2O, and an outlet (11) for treated effluent.

|
