PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high yield, by reacting a long-chain olefin, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and a primary or secondary amine in the presence of a catalyst using a specific alcohol, and subjecting the product to the phase-separation from the catalyst-containing aqueous phase by the addition of water to the system. CONSTITUTION:A 6-20C long-chain olefin is made to react with carbon monoxide, hydrogen and a primary or secondary amine, in the presence of a catalyst composed mainly of rhodium and/or ruthenium-containing compound (e.g. rhodium chloride) using an alcohol selected from a 2-6C dihydric alcohol, 3-6C trihydric alcohol, and the intermolecular dehydrative condensation product of 2-3C dihydric or trihydric alcohol. Water is added to the reaction product to effect the phase-separation of the product into the amine layer containing the objective tertiary amine and the aqueous layer containing the catalyst. The catalyst can be recovered and reused in high efficiency, and the selectivity of the objective amine can be improved. |
